In Hunter x Hunter, what is it famous for is definitely the soul, depth and breadth of each character and story arc that is panned out. Drawing may remains a concern, but once you start reading what the contents get to offer, you will understand why this is one of the highest rated manga of all time and fans remain steadfast in the writer despite a long hiatus (break).
Below we shall take a look at five of the best hunter arcs till now.
5 – Heavens Arena arc
The arc where you will get to peeve into the martial arts secrets of Hunter x Hunter, Nen. It is based on four principles and foundations: Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu.
- Ten: Controlling of aura around the body -> defend against emotional attacks
- Zetsu: Suppressing of aura from flowing out of body totally -> To increase awareness to other auras
- Ren: Generates more aura around the user (together with Ten to prevent leakage of aura) -> Increases defense and strength as well as generating higher volumes of aura for more advance skills
- Hatsu: The release of one’s aura that is cater to the user’s expression and shaping of their own Nen.
Not only that, you will finally get to know the various “classes” of the Hunter world (just like those in Diablo or D&D). Nen Users fall into one of the six broad categories of Emitter, Enhancer, Transmuter, manipulator, conjurer and specialist.
During this storyline, Hunter prodigies Gon and Killua venture to train, compete and earn money via the Heavens arena building, a place where fighters gather and compete. This is also the arc where you get to see one of the strongest and most popular hunter Hisoka in action against Kastro and even Gon. The fights were epic, and you just have to admire Hisoka’s coolness in battle and quick thinking and wit in coming up with the victories.
The explanation behind how each fight was won was also deeply elaborative, giving more details and thoughts towards what made this Hunter x hunter manga great.
4 – Yorknew City arc
The revenge arc of Kurapika over his clan on the Phantom Troupe, an A-class bounty organization consisting of top notch members that even include Hisoka (although his main reason for joining was just to fight troupe leader Chrollo Lucilfer). Even story prodigy Killua Zoldyck’s sister Kalluto is part of the current lineup of the current Phantom Troupe, whom their father Silva has ask them to stay away from and where Kalluto is slightly out of depth compared to the other members.
Many years ago the Phantom Troupe killed off the entire Kurta Clan to retrieve their Scarlet Eyes. In this arc, they have arrived in Yorknew City for an auction for the purpose of stealing everything in the auction. Kurapika went for revenge, while Killua follows Gon in the search for bidding of the Joystation Console that allows the playing of the Greed Island game, a game designed by Gon’s father Ging, and that Gon had wanted to use the game to search out his father.
This arc shows of the strength and unique skills of every member in the Phantom Troupe, and surprising that Kurapika is able to defeat one of its strongest member Uvogin, despite the high cost to win. This sets out the chain of events on the Troupe wanting to exert revenge back on Kurapika, the “Chain User”. Although ultimately Chrollo was captured, Kurapika exchange him back for his friends Gon and Killua, but the action also indirectly killed Pakunoda of the Troupe.
This chapter is highly rated for the sheer number of torn decisions at every twist and turn of the storyline. Every character has had to face with dangerous and pressing hard choices that will determine who lives and dies. Don’t get me wrong, there are still plenty of actions in this Yorknew City arc (aka the Phantom Troupe Arc). You need to read carefully to link each and every move together.
3 – Hunter Exam arc
Usually most manga doesn’t start off with a bang, but for Hunter x Hunter the starting arc is one of the best. It gives so much depth to the world of the hunters and their association. From how “lucrative” the job is, to how noble it can be as well.
The way the test were thought up by the writer brings very real scenarios that hunters will face in their line of job. Every single task that the characters had to undergo held plenty of considerations. This is not a manga where every process is direct. In fact, there were so much dilemma the characters faced during every twist of the examination, just like how we feel in reality. As always, this is how writer Yoshihiro Togashi gives the breadth and depth to every character in the Hunter x Hunter manga on their characteristics and their thoughts.
Gon:” It won’t be about which is correct, but about what’s truly in your heart when the chips are down”. A brilliant way of bringing characters’ soul into the whole story, thus giving each and individual character plenty of depth and uniqueness.
There is no epic battles or fights in this arc, but the way the storyline is crafted really sets the expectation of an incredible manga story to come.
2 – Greed Island arc
The scale of this storyline is just jaw-dropping. Yoshihiro Togashi has done a fabulous job of integrating the training process of the story prodigy Gon together with an entire “game” that was designed by Gon’s father, Ging Freecss, and his friends. The rules of the game can practically allow a new Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) style of adventure and the setting is on a island called Greed Island, the acronym comprising of the first letters of it’s eleven creators.
Initial thought as a “fictional” place were eventually discovered to be an island in the story’s real world that the players are teleported to rather than being “magic”into the “joystation” console that allows the players to play the game. There were also familiar cast in this storyline such as the Phantom Troupe trying to probe around for the Nen exorcist to help their boss Chrollo from regaining his strength and nen.
This is like a virtual reality of a RPG cum Yu-Gi-Oh! like game where you get to venture around towns, collect magically cards and conquer quests to complete the game. Where at the end, Gon’s main mission to meet his father Ging was out-thought by Ging, where he was sent together with Killua to another ace Hunter Kite instead.
All-in-all, a brilliant piece of story arc.
1 – Chimera Ant arc
It isn’t just about the strongest Hunter x Hunter character fighting against each other, there is just so much ideas to how the author actually came up with nations like Neo-Green Life (NGL), being an autonomous state and part of the Mitene Union where they can’t use technology and thus giving the mutated Chimera ants a chance to establish a foothold.
In this arc, you would be pleasantly brought through the development process of how these ants actually grew in the human world. How these insects, through human blood that have been passed down to form even more elite bloodlines by the queen. How they even learn about the human race, have ranks amongst themselves, and hack, even want to be named and compete amongst themselves.
Of course, the main part is how the strongest fighters in the Hunter x Hunter world is involved in the story plot. Ranging from epic battle such as Isaac Netero’s battle against Meruem, to the fight where Squadron Leader Chimera Ant, Cheetu, was one punch KO-ed by Silva Zoldyck, the current head of the famous assassin family the Zoldyck. You will also get to see Gon in rage mode as he transform into a darker and adult self to crush the royal guard Pitou of the Ant King Meruem.
This story arc just have to be ranked as the best so far for Hunter x Hunter.
