Gomu Gomu Gear 4!! Monkey D.Luffy’s latest fighting technique coupled with his Busoshoku Haki was able to bring down powerful Shichibukai Doflamingo. There is no shortage of legendary battles and fight scenes in the pirate world of One Piece manga.
With so many fights for Luffy in the One Piece storyline, which is the most exciting thus far? Check out these epic five!
Monkey D. Luffy vs Crocodile (Alabasta Arc / Manga Chapters: 155 – 217 / Anime: 92 – 130)
The battle that propelled Luffy into the big league of the pirate world. In the Alabasta Arc, Crocodile was then one of the hotshot Shichibukai (Seven Warlords of the Sea), with a 81 million berries bounty, which was then in the manga timeline a big deal.
Sir Crocodile was also a logia user, considered amongst the most powerful category of the devil fruit in terms of power as anyone without Haki would be hard pressed to defeat them. Also known as the Desert King, Crocodile ate the Sand-Sand (aka Suna Suna) Fruit, and have the ability to control sand. He has been seen in the series to create sand blades, sandstorms, quick sands and even the power to dehydrate a person via physical contact.
We need to note that Luffy was defeated twice near to his death by Crocodile before. For Luffy to be able to come back again and again with the will and learning from his battle mistakes was a marvelous display of the never-say-die attitude.
This victory also shot Luffy’s initial bounty of 30 million to 100 million, the mark to be considered Supernovas, aka Top Rookies, in the One Piece pirate world.
Luffy vs Enel (Skypiea Arc / Manga Chapters: 237 – 302 / Anime: 153 – 195)
Enel (aka Eneru) is the former “God” of Skypiea and a user of the Rumble-Rumble Fruit (aka Goro Goro), which allows him to control lightning. Enel’s speed and movement is as fast as lightning, couple with the fact he can launch lightning bolts as well as electrical attacks with voltages up to 200k volts. The lightning ball that he conjures has the destructive power to totally obliterate an island.
It was also the first time when the Observation Haki was used (they call it Mantra in the Sky Islands) in the One Piece series. Once confirmed by writer Oda that if Enel were to have a bounty on his head, it will be in the mark of around the 500 million berries. Well, that’s what make One Piece exciting as we are always guessing who and which levels are the future bounties going to be like.
Perhaps if Enel’s enemy wasn’t Luffy, who with his natural devil fruit power of rubber, the non-conductor of electricity, the god of lightning and thunder wouldn’t have been so soundly beaten.
Luffy vs Rob Lucci (Enies Lobby Arc / Manga Chapters: 375 – 430 / Anime: 264 – 312)
The start of Luffy’s Straw Hat crew’s legacy, I rank this story arc as one of the most critical and impressive amongst the whole of One Piece manga. The fall of the Enies Lobby, a facility of the World Government which was never taken down before when protected by the Cipher Pol (CP) squad, an elite secret team of the government.
When Luffy’s team mate Robin was captured, he had to go face-to-face with the leader of the CP9, Rob Lucci. To be a CP9 member, one need to master the Rokushiki, a kind of six style martial arts. Lucci was also able to activate Rokuogan, the ultimate technique of the Rohushiki.
Besides martial arts, Rob Lucci is also a Zoan-type fruit user which he is able to transform into a leopard and human-leopard humanoid. This greatly increases his strength and durability. Only through Luffy’s new-found fighting technique of Gear 2 and 3 was he able to beat Rob Lucci.
It was last seen with Lucci joining the most elite and strongest team, the CP-0. When will Luffy and Lucci meet again? Time will tell.
Luffy vs Shiki (Anime Movie 10 – Strong World)
The first person before Luffy to be able to escape the fame prison Impel Down, Shiki the Golden Lion came from the same generation era of pirates with the great Pirate King Rogers as well as the powerful Yonko (aka Four Emperors), Whitebeard Edward Newgate.
Also known as the Flying Pirate, Shiki possesses the Float-Float devil fruit, which allows him to make any item leviate. He is also highly skilled in swordsmanship. A testimony to how great is his capability may perhaps be that he was sentenced to Impel Down level 6, which houses the worst criminals.
Not only that, Shiki was able to escape the highly fortified prison on his own (compared to Luffy, who had assistance from Shichibukais like Crocodile and Jinbei, plus a couple of other prominent figures), as well as commanding the largest known fleet of pirate ships and troops during his era.
Will this legendary pirate ever appear again in the manga? Let’s see.
Luffy vs Donquixote Doflamingo (Dressrosa Arc / Manga Chapters: 700 – 801 / Anime: 629 – 736)
Another beautifully crafted One Piece story arc by writer Eiichiro Oda. This marked the first of many of the One Piece story – the formation of Luffy’s Grand Straw Hat fleet, Luffy’s demonstration of his Gear Four technique, and also the first fight against a Warlord of the Sea who is able to use the all-powerful Haoshoku Haki (also known as Conqueror’s Haki)
The king of Dressrosa and a former World Noble, Doflamingo’s speed, skills and strength is amongst the strongest thus far. He was able to easily take down Vice Admiral Smoker (who is a formidable logia user) as well as Trafalgar Law, who was also a 400 million Shichibukai himself.
Having eaten the String-String Fruit, Doflamingo is able to control and manipulate strings. This ability can be used to control victims’ movement, or able to cut through solid objects such as meteorites. At one scene, it was also able to be used to heal his internal organs. Doflamingo has such mastery over his devil fruit ability so much that he is able to turn the surroundings into strings.
Actually, even after the timeskip training for Luffy, he was only able to beat Doflamingo after a break of ten minutes as he used up too much Haki in their first round. This just showed how powerful the captain of the Donquixote family is.
This stunning arc also marks the third of the Royal Shichibukai that is taken down by Luffy and his crew, with Doflamingo being sent to Impel Down during the end of the story line. Is the World Government feeling the heat? You bet!
