With Naruto’s core storyline coming to an end and Bleach seemingly entering the final battle of the Soul Society, there are still others that are legendary anime/manga or those which has the potential to develop into an epic series like One Piece and Fairy tail. We take a look at those animes like Bleach and Naruto here.
Rurouni Kenshin (also known as Samurai X)
One of the best selling samurai manga of all time. The transition into the anime series does not disappoint. The word “Rurouni” refers to a wandering and masterless samurai, which story protagonist Himura Kenshin was during the start of the series.
Kenshin was the legendary Himura Battōsai during Japan’s Meiji Revolution period. Kenshin is kind-hearted in nature, thus the need to kill just to bring peace to Japan was still something that made him very guilty, and thus, he now carries a sakabatō (Reverse-Blade sword) and vow never to kill again.
The whole story evolves around three main story arcs: Tokyo, Kyoto (Makoto Shishio Arc) as well as the Jinchū Arc (Revenge Arc). Out of these 3 story plots, the one you must watch is the Kyoto Arc, where Shishio Makoto is one of the best top villain around. This is where Kenshin needs to face his Battōsai successor, and this successor is a force to be reckon with.
It is so popular in Japan that there is even a Rurouni Kenshin movie Trilogy. Samurai X was also my top ranked samurai manga and anime before Naruto came along.
Claymore centres around a medieval landscape where the human race is attacked by evil beings call the Yoma. These yoma can shape-shift into human form and fed on humans. The island is split into 47 districts, each protected by a Claymore warrior under a group called The Organization. Be prepared to bring a magnifying glass though, as there may be a need to identify the many characters that seems alike (we have like more than 50+ Claymores, including the previous generations).
Each Claymore (being half-Yoma) has enhanced strength, intelligence and agility. As both Yoma and Claymores draw their power from a demonic energy called Yoki, once it pushes above 80% limit, a Claymore will become an Awakened Being, a level up type of Yoma.
That is where the fun comes in. Although the current generation of Claymores are all female, long ago there were male Claymores who crossed the 80% boundary and have became an even more powerful awakened beings themselves. There are rankings in the Claymore hierarchy, and the former No 1 who became an awakened being is coined the Abyssal One.
I especially enjoyed the part where each Abyssal Ones controlled their own territory, before White Silver King Isley of the North started to raise his army to conquer other regions, thus kick-starting the entire story series.
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
One of the fastest manga to anime to movie series ever. Shingeki no Kyojin’s (also known as Attack on Titan) graphics on human being eaten up by mysterious Titans (enormous humanoids) is not for the faint-hearted.
A hundred years before the story started, humans were nearly wipe out by the sudden appearance of these Titans. The cities in the story now are surrounded by huge walls meant to protect against the Titans. The story protagonists: Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, became military fighters after they watched their hometown destroyed and Eren’s mother eaten by the Titans.
After many battle engagements with the ferocious Titans, the Attack on Titan story plot came with a shocking twist after knowing that these Titans were in fact humans.
Hunter x Hunter
Writer Yoshihiro Togashi is famous for going on breaks with his manga publishing, and now Hunter x Hunter is finally back after a one and a half year gap. Make no mistake, Hunter x hunter is still very very highly rated by it’s fans, just as the writer’s previous masterpiece, YuYu Hakusho.
Story protagonist Gon Freecss discovered that his father did not die but instead was part of a vocation call the Hunter. Hunters are licensed professionals who roam the world hunting for treasures or taking on unique jobs such as hunting down the wanted. Inspired, Gon left his hometown, took and pass the hunter examinations while along the way found his dad and made friends with other hunters.
If you want complexity akin to Bleach’s dozens of bankais and complicated techniques, you will find it in Hunter x Hunter. But with it also comes very smart, detailed and engaging story plots.
Nanatsu no Taizai (The Seven Deadly Sins)
The Seven Deadly Sins is a story plot based on knights and the supernaturals such as vampires and demons. Holy terms such as Sins and Commandments are used to form the wonderfully crafted characters and their organization in the story.
The main characters of the manga and anime is the Seven Deadly Sins, once a group of knights in the region of Britannia who was disbanded after they plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom. When another group of knights named the Holy Knights overtook the kingdom, the third princess Elizabeth started to seek out the Seven Deadly Sins in the hope to reclaim the country.
There are plenty of actions and humour in this series while you enjoy the process of the princess gathering back the whole team of the Seven knights, which gives Nanatsu no Taizai a touch of the One Piece manga and series story theme.
