Its finally here! The 20th anniversary of Pokemon since it’s creation. I have been a fan of Pokemon since the day it started with the distinctive Red and Green box. This game is a mixture of RPG with Tamagotchi and the game ability to collect so many different creatures was just jaw-dropping to me during those days.
The ability for the game developers to integrate hardware with gameplay was truly astonishing, as is the team’s ability to continue to innovate and improve on its overall game play. It’s hundreds of Pokemons with unique features and it’s “gotta catch ‘em all!” just made me spent countless hours trying to collect this crazy list of cute creatures.
The latest Pokemon Sun and Moon is coming soon in holidays 2016, the first since Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire all the way back in 2014. Based on the fact that this is one hugely significant year for the Pokemons, I have the feeling the game developers will not let any fans down.
While waiting for more previews of the latest Sun & Moon, let’s take a look at the very best so far amongst all of the series.
Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition – Pika—chuuuuuu~~ I choose you!!
Year of Release: 1998
New Features: Pikachu follows you and has a personality where you can interact with
Start off with: Pikachu (only, but hey that’s all we wanted right?)
Legendary Pokemon: MewTwo + Legendary Birds (Articuno +Zapdos + Moltres)
Famous for: Pikachu and kick starting the billion dollar franchise with innovative gameplay and combination of hardware for trading of Pokemon
Who can ever forget the cutest Pokemon box cover. A special version to the Red and Blue versions and started out just like its anime version with the player as Ash with Eevee as your rival character. The game conceided with its anime version as Team Rocket had Jessie and James showing up with their pokemons Meowth, Ekans and Koffing.
Pikachu is able to follow you as you venture around Kanto. The game developers brilliantly give Pikachu a personality, meaning it can grow to love or dislike you! (depending on how you manage to level it during the game, of course causing Pikachu to faint more often WILL NOT put you in it’s good books). Not only that, you even get to play a fun little mini game of Pikachu surfing the waves.
Diamond & Pearl – The first NDS version of the Pokemon game series does not disappoint
Console: Nintendo DS
Year of Release: 2006
New Features: Global Trade Station + Poketch + Connect using NDS wifi + allows connection to GBA games using the dual-slot function to allow certain pokemon to appear
Start off with: Turtwig or Chimchar or Piplup
Legendary Pokemon: Arceus + Creation Trio (Dialga / Palkia / Giratina) + Shaymin + Lunar Duo (Cresselia and Darkrai)
Famous for: The first appearance of “God Creator” Arceus.
The first NDS pokemon game with an addition of 107 new Pokemon as well as new addition of the Sinnoh region which is located north of Kanto, Johto and Hoenn.
I love Pokemon’s array of legendary creatures as they add more mystery into the universe of Pokemon. The introduction of “The Original One” Arceus (practically your god creator) and its Creation Trio was a huge draw to me at that time, not to mention the vast lands of Sinnoh when the maps are just way massive as well as the interactive Global Trade Station.
Of course, the first Pokemon game running on the powerful Nintendo DS version also allows the game to bring out the richer and more detailed graphics and design of the wonderous Pokemon world.
This game is so addictive that it costed me 100+ hours of my youth playing it!!
HeartGold & SoulSilver – Compilation of its classics
Console: Nintendo DS (NDS)
Year of release: 2009
New Features: You get to explore Kanto after completing the game plus a wide range of the legendary creatures that you can catch from the previous generation + Practically a all-in-one set + Pokewalker
Start off with: Chikorita or Cyndaquil or Totodile
Legendary Pokemon: Lugia + Ho-oh + Mew + MewTwo + Legendary Birds (Articuno +Zapdos + Moltres)
Famous for: Having it’s previous series protagonist as it’s final boss
This was a remake of the original Gold and Silver version, the nearest to the most classical series that made it a global phenomenon. If you ever want to play one of the older generation of Pokemon, HeartGold and SoulSilver being also one of the best selling Nintendo DS game can’t go wrong. The Pokewalker is also something of a interesting (though not critical) addition to the game by allow a Tamagotchi style of collection.
Although it most probably can’t beat the newer series of the game, everything you love about the classics of the game is here. The beautifully rendered graphics make things even better and the battle with protagonist Red of the earlier series just top this off.
Black & White 2 – the First sequel
Console: Nintendo DS
Year of release: 2010
New Features: Pokemon Dream World + Entralink + Pokemon Global Link. 10 pokeballs instead of 5 + Pokemon world Tournament + Pokestar Studios + In-game achievements + New region of Unova
Start off with: Snivy or Tepig or Oshawott
Legendary Pokemon: Tao Trio (Reshiram + Zekrom + Kyurem) + Forces of Nature (Tornadus + Thundurus + Landorus) + Swords of Justice (Cobalion + Terrakion + Virizion + Keldeo) + Kyurem (black and white)
Famous for: The first Pokemon game sequel to be introduced
The inclusion of Pokemons from earlier games made this game larger and better (300 Pokemon in fact). The amount of activities which you can participate within the game itself is also staggering. The world tournament, which added champion and gym leaders from the previous versions for one huge tournament really brought back the old times.
The ability to fuse and get the black and white Kyurem versions are just fantastic! Not to mention the graphics are better than any of the past series as well with seasonal change that affects your gameplay and adds more life to the world of Pokemon. Did I just mentioned earlier that I love legendary Pokemons??
X & Y – Candidate for best ever Pokemon game?
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Year of release: 2013
New Features: 1st 3D gameplay + battle up to 5 pokemon at 1 time + 1 new type: Fairy + Mega Evolution + Wonder Trade + Battle Spot
Start off with: Chespin or Fennekin or Froakie
Legendary Pokemon: Xerneas + Yveltal + Zygarde + Legendary Birds (Articuno +Zapdos + Moltres)
Famous for: First fully 3D Pokemon game!!
In short, this game is highly about having the ability to customize as much as you want. From your avatars to your cute Pokemons. This ability to customize each stat of a Pokemon could be both fun and frustrating (since there are just some many points which you can play around with).
Being able to see the creatures in 3D is something every gamer yearns for, but also for the first time seeing the Pokemon world in full 3D is just a sight to behold, the beautiful graphics just makes you want to enjoy every scenery in your familiar Pokemon world. Your Charizards and Mewtwos and Pikachus just looks and feel different when in 3D format.
The gameplay for Mega-Evolution just makes battle triple the fun!! Although this ability can only be used during battle, it allows yet another level of being able to have a more in-depth use of the evoluationable Pokemons.
Although the storyline really isn’t much to shout about, I rank this amongst the best due to the highly-customizable features as well as the stunning visual environment and effects.
